Alliance “SmartSenior” – Intelligent services for seniors

The demographic change confronts Germany with a major social challenge. The retention of living standards for an aging society regarding economic, social and health issues is a declared objective of various initiatives.  The “SmartSenior” alliance is a consortium of various partners from industry and research with the aim to develop new technologies and services to preserve health and autonomy of elderly people.

In many cases the general availability of medical support, emergency detection, automatic initiation of assistance and the possibility of monitoring therapy-relevant parameters, e.g. for chronically ill people, suffices to give seniors the necessary certainty in a domestic environment and to enable the desired mobility. To grant this kind of attendance the Telemedical Center of the Charité (TMCC) in alliance with partners from industry and science develops a telemedical platform (TDPF).

Special conditions have to be considered: Since the supply of services consists for the most part of medical services, sophisticated requirements have to be defined, e.g. the transfer of encrypted medical data and the deployment of device technology with certification according to medical standards. A further important condition is the guarantee of a 24/7 service and a seamless interconnectedness between the participating service providers, which many of the scenarios for medical precaution, support and attendance demand.

The lack of standardization and interfaces, of adequate business models and context-sensitive services as well as services restricted to certain communication channels represent further obstacles to the deployment of such systems.

The Telemedical Center of the Charité heads the subproject “Telemedical Service Center” within the alliance. By designing the concept of business models, the establishment of the telemedical standard TM7 and the development of a suitable billing system this subproject lays the foundation for a broad deployment of telemedical services. Services which will be developed by the other subprojects in close cooperation with TMCC, will be provided by the TDPF. A prototype will soon be set up by the Charité which - after further development for routine operation - will present a possibility for other medical service providers to offer according services.
